Twas the Night Before Break

Twas the night before Winter Break, when all through the halls

Not a creature was stirring, and I ignored my phone calls,

Thanks to these headphones placed on my head with care,

To ease studying in hopes that my exam not be a nightmare.

The good students were nestled all snug in extra-long beds,

While visions of straight-A’s danced in their heads.

And my roomie and I wishing we could go home ASAP

Can’t wait to settle our brains for a long winter’s nap!

When out on the quad there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my desk chair to see what was the matter.

I opened a new window on my new notebook computer,

As I waited for the news feed to explain all the banter.

The tweets and wall posts spoke of new-fallen snow

So I jumped off my loft to grab my favorite gizmo.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature fridge, and eight tiny cold beers.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard out in the hall,

the music from the speakers shaking the wall.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

The message on my door made me fall to the ground.

I dressed in a fury and unplugged all the plugs,

And my clothes were strewn about on my area rugs.

A bundle of papers I flung in my backpack,

And I searched for my boots on my handy shoe rack.

I looked up at my roommate's shining white grin,

As she looked at her duffle packed to the brim.

She had picked up her pack and wore it on her belly,

And it shook when she laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

Our bags chubby and plump, we were jolly old selves,

And I laughed when I saw us in the mirror above our shelves!

With a wink of her eye and a twist of her head,

And the look on her face, I knew I had nothing to dread.

We spoke not a word, but went straight for the door,

And spilled thru the hallway, then turned to explore.

Laying in the quad was a thick sheet of snow,

The blessing we needed to let us all go!

We sprang to our sleigh, let out a whistle,

And away we flew like the down of a thistle.

As we drove I exclaimed, ‘ere we drive out of sight,

"Happy Break to all, and to all a good-night!"

THE END.
