7 Ways to Say "I Love Myself" without Breaking the Bank

College Dorm Room Tips: Hook Up Your Dorm offers 7 ways to say make your dorm room a place you love to be.

Now that everyone (both hopeless romantics and those that hate them) has made it through Valentine's Day, we thought we'd turn things around a bit! Last week, inboxes were flooded with Valentine's emails - discounts, specials and gift tips galore.  And now that everyone has spent all of their time and money telling everyone they love how special they are, we can focus on the ME, Myself, and My Dorm Room. Yep, that's right, let's take some time to pamper ourselves. The dorm experts are here to help you make your dorm room a place that you love to be. Make your heart and your wallet happy with these tips to say, "I love myself" without breaking your budget. (Tips 5 through 7 are split for him and her)

FOR "ME"

1)     With various filters and water fountains these days no one should pay too much for bottled water. Try a Nalgene bottle instead.

2)     If you have kinks in your back from typing too many papers or sore legs after working off those holiday lbs, a foam roller is your answer. You use your own body weight to roll on the tightened muscle - and it’s amazing how much tightness you can actually roll out. Plus, foam rollers are easy to tuck in obscure places and if you wake up in the middle of the night with a charlie horse a roller is a step away. *Read instructions before using!

3)     Down Pillows – Get rid of that block of wood you’ve grown accustomed to and replace it with a soft spot for your head to melt into after a long day of studying. The Company Store has custom down pillows for people those who are stomach, back or side sleepers.

4)     Splurge Alert! C'mon, you deserve it.  Fatboy Bean chairs - these bean bag chairs are redefining the way we sit. They can be propped up as a chair for while you type those 30-pagers and lounged on come Sunday night when watching a movie. Plus the cover is both easy to clean and comfy to your skin.

IF "ME" IS A HE

5)     Slippers add a “settled-in” feeling to living in the dorm that flip-flops at 7AM will never achieve. Try these slippers from Lands' End. They are manly, comfortable and won't break your budget.

6)     Make sure to keep yourself looking as spiffy as Don Draper for internship interviews by keeping hangnails in check and your brows looking more Ernie than Burt with this leather pouch set containing tweezers and nail clippers from Brookstone. Sure you can get clippers at any drugstore - but they don’t come with a travel-friendly pouch that provides a spot to put everything in.

7)     Every guy we know from HUYD has been weary of metro-sexual creams – but end up raving about how amazing Kiehl’s products are. The after-shave has been talked up the most and is definitely worth a whirl if you don’t mind spending an extra $10 or so.

IF "ME" IS A SHE

5)     Even during the last leg of winter and as spring arrives, house slippers with proper soles for strolling make strange common areas of dorms cozier. Try these Moc Suede Slippers from Lands' End. They are snuggly, inexpensive and classic.

6)     Quick Skin Uplifts. We can’t think of a more fulfilling way to say “I love myself,” than buying a time-tested product to invigorate your skin, your senses, and make you feel fresh in the dead of winter. Go to Allure.com to find products that have been tried and proven so you get your $’s worth.  We suggest a hydrating mask or this gentle exfoliating body scrub from Kiehl’s.

7)     Make your day a bit more delightful by tossing a potpourri bag into one of your drawers. The scent of lavender every time you take something out to wear is a small daily luxury. If you have a little more time – HUYD suggests scented drawer liners. While monster stores we love are now selling them, nothing beats the original liners sold at Crabtree & Evelyn.

*Bonus - Snickers produced a highly talked about Betty White Super Bowl commercial, but the snack bars themselves have nothing on Chocolate Coconut Macaroons from Godiva. They’re affordable. $20. Need we say more? (Since chocolates should be around all time, not just on Valentine's Day.)

9 Tips for Spring Semester

College Dorm Room Tips: Hook Up Your Dorm offers 9 ways to make spring semester outshine the fall.

9 WAYS TO MAKE 2ND SEMESTER OUTSHINE THE 1ST

Feel like you’re always looking for the remote? It’s amazing that you can still lose it in a room as small as your dorm. Well, you're not alone! A British Sky Broadcasting poll revealed that the average adult will cumulatively waste one month of their life looking for the TV remote. And we’re guessing statistics in the U.S. aren’t much better, so keep reading to cut down on the frequency of times you lose the remote and to learn other lifesaving tips. This recession-friendly list also covers topics from investments every partygoer should look into to how hooking up your dorm can leave you better prepared for internships.

9 Quick Tips:

1)     How many times have you asked where the remote is and felt the brief panic that ensues shortly after? Cut down on the frequency of this situation or avoid it altogether by purchasing Velcro squares. Stick a piece on the back of the remote, a piece on a common place on the wall (even next to the bed) and voila, remote control holder.

2)     How one goes about washing their laundry is personal but everyone has to deal with the time-consuming task of somehow organizing it all beforehand. And that will never end. Make it easier on yourself with a sectioned laundry hamper. Two, three or four sectioned, go with whatever suits your sorting fancy and save time separating whites from darks, laundry from dry cleaning, or towels from laundry.

3)     Crazy costume pieces are an investment because themed events requiring ridiculous dress codes don't end just because you've graduated from college. It cannot be stressed enough how many times someone could use a pair of fluorescent pink shiny leggings during college and the years after. It’s also possible for guys to have a color coordinated sweatband for every retro-classic occasion. If you’re the type who goes the extra mile, try an interactive Electric Rock Guitar Shirt

4)    For those who want to appear like they have it together for internships and business ventures, invest in shoe trees. Trees preserve the shape and look of a shoe. Plus, they prolong the number of months between occasions that you’ll need to shell out hard-earned (or awaited) dollars to buy a new pair of shoes.

5)     Nothing says, “I watch trilogies and love technology” like a bean bag chair for your iPhone. It doesn’t actually charge the phone but it is a way to technically fit another bean bag chair in your dorm. Who wouldn’t appreciate that?

6)     College is the perfect time to acquire a reusable tote bag for picking up items to go in your mini fridge. Reusable bags also come in handy when carrying items to house parties. Then, once you get there, you can easily roll it up for easy storage. Or, if you get caught in the rain - it won't break, leaving everything to fall out (hello paper bags). Besides, they are eco-friendly and look much nicer than a plastic bag. And if you want to feel extra good about your purchase and happen to live near a Whole Foods market, pick up a Feed 100 bag and the proceeds will feed 100 school meals to hungry children in Rwanda through the UN World Food Program. * In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, proceeds from FEED 1 and FEED 2 bags sold online through June will be directed towards FEED Haiti campaign to ensure continuation of school feeding for Haitian children.

7)     Get the ambiance you really want with stick on battery operated lights to add a different tone to that fluorescent-essence that make so many of us look... well, let's just say not camera phone ready.

8)    Have you ever been really exhausted, looked at something across the room, wanted to get it… but don't, because not moving more than a rotation in your bed is more important to you than getting that something? If it hasn't happened yet – I’m going to go out on a limb and predict it will. Hang a Sidekick Bedside Organizer to have everything you might need in the middle of the night and beyond - within a rotational reach.

9)     The Animal House poster with John Belushi wearing a sweatshirt reading “College” is like a rite of passage, but instead of bolting to the standard campus poster fair for your next piece of decorative art, pay attention to your art major classmates and photographer friends. There’s a wealth of artistic talent in college, so casually keep an eye on their work and if you see something of interest, let them know. Your friend might be honored to get their work on display. Offer to front the cost of supplies and their time. Or ask if they would sell you the specific piece you like. You'll have a conversational work of art that is original, shows your support of fellow students, and will create more memories.
